I like bands that try to push the envelope, I really do. It deserves a lot of respect and for any band trying to create something different I will always have time for them. There’s nothing I like better than to listen to a new song/album and really feel like I’ve heard something new, something really impressive and something that inspires me. Unfortunately, I don’t think Coldplay will ever be one of these bands, although they must be applauded for continuing in the free music vein.
Chris Martin has said they’re trying to go in a new direction, which in my book is at least a positive attempt. I know I’ve heard him talk about the influences of Sigur Ros and similar progressive bands, but, this song is awful.
For once the recording of Martins’ voice and piano is terrible, something they usually get right considering the uniqueness of both. ‘Violet Hill’ drags you into a pile of shit and drowns you slowly in just under 4 minutes. The lyrics are woefully depressing, Martin whines and whines about snow and ‘if you love me won’t you let me know’. It actually sounds like he’s bored singing this song and I don’t blame him.
There is nothing new in this song and it does not promise anything great from the new album. The guitar, bass, and drums are monotonous and dull. It’s almost a relief when ‘Trouble’ kicks in as their next track on mySpace (I wasn’t registering with them just to download it).
So, in conclusion, I don’t like this song and I don’t think I will ever be able to like Coldplay, but at least they’re trying.

The album artwork is also terrible. Single not so bad…
