Deus - Vantage Point

Deus (or dEus) have been around for years, since 1989 to be precise. I remember hearing ‘Worst Case Scenario’ just as I was getting into music and really liking them but I just never found time to really get into them. When I heard about ‘Pocket Revolution’, their last album in 2005, I had to give it a listen. I was surprised at how familiar it all was and again just couldn’t get into it, but appreciated it all the same.

Their new album, ‘Vantage Point’, again teases and tempts you into listening to them but again it seems to be missing an interesting edge to keep it going. The songwriting is accomplished and good and some of the strings (’When She Comes Down’) and backing vocals (’Eternal Women’) are delightful but on a whole it’s basically background music, the type that makes people talk louder at a party but there’s always a guy in the corner trying to get people to shut up ‘cos his favourite bit is coming up.

Don’t get me wrong, I like dEus. I like that they’ve been around for so long. I like that they’re incredibly consistent. I like that I could never call a song of there’s bad. However, I don’t like their lack of imagination and seeming reluctance to experiment.

One album (maybe two) was enough.
